NUIM Christmas Card 2009

December 21, 2009 · Posted in Thesis · Comments Off on NUIM Christmas Card 2009

My research university, National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM), has surprisingly sent me a Christmas card.

To receive a greeting, 2 years since I left the country and 1 year since I graduated, it is definitely out of expectation.

It has certainly brightened up my day! Merry Christmas to you too!

Joshua Bell – Performance at the Metro

December 17, 2009 · Posted in Anything · 1 Comment

There is something for all of us to think about. Continue reading the article below and you’ll find out what’s missing in your life.

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. A man with a violin played 6 Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes: a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

Blog Upgraded to WordPress 2.9 Release Candidate 1

December 17, 2009 · Posted in Site Info · 1 Comment

As you’d probably noticed from my past article about upgrading the site to run on WordPress 2.9 Beta version and running into some buggy issue, the latest release of the 2.9.x family is now available – WordPress 2.9 Release Candidate 1.

Of course, without hesitation, I upgraded to this release hoping that it would resolve the memory allocation issue. Unfortunately, I realised it did not happen.

Then, I tell myself, perhaps it might be good to tweak a little on the plugins; that is, to deactivate some plugins and see how it turns out. Alas! I deactivated FireStats plugin, the memory issue is gone. Subsequently, I re-activated the plugin. The issue does not come back anymore.

Not exactly sure why it happens this way – but at least it seems to work.

THX Dolby Digital Surround Sound

This is where I get my sound effect.

I like the 20th Century Fox introduction. It is so cool, especially when that is used to playback and create your personal montage.

Buggy WordPress 2.9?

December 11, 2009 · Posted in Site Info · 3 Comments

As an avid WordPress user, I am always curious to try out the latest version of WordPress. Currently installed on my blog is the nightly build of WordPress 2.9.

Unfortunately, I encountered some issue that I have not experienced before when using the stable version of WordPress 2.8.x (see above messages). It seems to be related to memory allocation error.

The latest version of WordPress seems to be taking up a lot more memory to run this application than before. I hope that the developers can look into this, because not all hosting server can accommodate this high memory demand.

Disappointed with M1 over iPhone

December 11, 2009 · Posted in Rant Corner · 1 Comment

Prior the release of iPhone sales by MobileOne (M1), the company is splashing the iPhone advertisement across the front pages of its website, including M1Shop website. To encourage visitors and customers, M1 even provides a feature for users to “reserve” the iPhones.

So, when the actual day of release comes on Wednesday, 9th December 2009, all of us were happy with the announcement. However, that’s not the main story. Sadly, M1 reverted an email stating that,

…Due to overwhelming demand, the iPhone 3GS 32GB which you’ve reserved is currently out of stock….

How can this possible, when in actual fact I have made a RESERVATION! Yet, on the other hand, sales of iPhones were placed on the showcase at every M1 shop. If this is a kind of Marketing gimmick (tactics), I am truly disappointed at the way M1 is handling its prospective customers.

Knowing this would happen, I won’t even bother to waste my time registering my information online with M1.
