Change of Pole Position in the Premiership Title Race Over Christmas

Premiership Table on 26 December 2007Just an hour ago, I read the BBC Sports News section only to find out that Manchester United has claimed top spot in the Premiership table, following the match yesterday, December 26, 2007 on Boxing Day.

Of the so-called Top 4; that is, Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, only Liverpool and Manchester United registered wins over their opponents with Arsenal and Chelsea drawn against their rivals.

Manchester United scored 4 goals, courtesy from Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and a double from Louis Saha, away against Sunderland, managed by Roy Keane, former Manchester United skipper. Cristiano strikes bring his tally to top the Scorer’s chart and put him in pole position for the Golden Boots’ award.

Portsmouth denied Arsenal a win by having a goal-less draw at Fratton Park. As such, Arsenal missed the chance to reclaim top spot. Arsenal was playing a 4-5-1 formation, but it fails to find a way into Portsmouth net.

Chelsea, on the other hand, has a dramatic outcome seeing 3 red cards shown to the players from both side. Aston Villa was already 2 goals up at 0-2, but due to poor refereeing (as claimed by Martin O’Neil), Chelsea managed to turn the tide around to 4-3. In the dying minutes before full time, a penalty is given to Aston Villa to secure them a priceless point.

Liverpool was saved by Steven Gerrard as they and Derby was heading towards a 1-1 draw. Gerrard’s last-grasp goal spared Liverpool the blushes against the lowly Derby.
