Leaving more than 5,000 people dead, with the figures rising every moment, an earthquake measuring 7.8 7.9 on the Richer Scale has erupted in China’s south-western Sichuan province. The event took place at 1428hrs +8hrs GMT (local time) on Monday afternoon, May 12, 2008.
The epicentre of the earthquake was about 92km (57 miles) from Chengdu, Sichuan’s provincial capital, and was known to be the largest in magnitude since 1976, the one that previously hit China.
The extent of how strong the effect can be felt is as far as 2,000km away. Buildings in Beijing, Taiwan and even Bangkok could felt the tremour rocking the infrastructure. People were reported feeling sudden dizziness because of the motion caused by the wavelet effect.
With death tolls rising every now and then, China certainly needs urgent aids as soon as possible. One of the closest countries within the vicinity, Japan, has offered to send aid. In addition, hundreds of tents and thousands of blankets were delivered to the affected area for the victims.
