National Service Recognition Award (NSRA)

During the Singapore’s National Day Rally (broadcasted live island-wide), the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that the Defense Ministry will award Singapore citizens who have served National Service, through the National Service Recognition Award, or NSRA in short.

The NSRA is a monetary award (valued between $9,000 and $10,500) for each NSman by the time he completes his operationally ready national service (ORNS), or to be precise, reservist training cycle. It will be disbursed in three milestones, at $3000 each. For commanders (ranked 3rd Sergeant and above, an additional $500 will be given).

Here is breakdown of the 3 milestones:

  1. 1st tranche: upon completion of the 20th month of full-time national service.
  2. 2nd tranche: after the completion of 3 high-key in-camp training or 5 in-camp trainings, whichever is earlier.
  3. 3rd tranche: upon completion of the full ORNS training cycle.

Here’s the key note:

The 1st award is paid into the post-secondary education account (PSEA) to meet the NSman’s aspiration towards his studies. The 2nd and 3rd payment will be deposited into his CPF Ordinary, MediSave and Special accounts, in line with prevailing CPF contribution rates.

So, as you can see… you don’t get the use the money directly. Nonetheless, you won’t know when these will come in handy.
