Workers’ Party is Fielding Li Lian for Punggol East Election

Li Lian - Workers' Party

Workers’ Party (WP) has announced last night that they will be fielding Lee Li Lian, instead of Gerald Giam, for the Punggol East re-election. According to AsiaOne news, they are two likely reasons why she’s being fielded.

Firstly, with the growing likelihood of a multi-cornered fight, the WP has assessed its chances of victory and decided that there is little chance of winning Punggol East. Based on this logic, the party may have decided to minimize the defeat impact should they fail in the contest. Losing in Punggol East will make it that much harder for Mr Giam to reclaim his hard-won status now and set his sights on other constituencies in future battles.

Secondly, the WP is sending out the message that it is a political party that values hard work and consistency over stardom.

Will the strategy pay off for WP? I don’t know, only time will tell.
